Apple Pay on Apple Watch

Exxon Mobil and the Speedpass+ app make it possible for you to pay for your gas using Apple Pay. You can even use your Apple Watch to fill 'er up!

Exxon Mobil has a convenient payment app, Speedpass+ that lets you use Apple Pay to purchase gas. You don't even have to get out of the car to complete the transaction (though you do have to brave the harsh weather to pump the gas). The app was just updated with support for Apple Watch. So, now, you can complete the entire transaction right from your wrist.

Speedpass+ is a mobile payment options for Exxon Mobil. Users can set up an account and link their credit cards. If you have Apple Pay set up on your iPhone, it will connect to it automatically. You don't even need to add a different payment option.

If you have Apple Pay set up on your compatible devices, simply download the Speedpass+ app and create an account. Your Apple Pay information is automatically added to your account.

What you do need, is the Speedpass+ app installed on your iPhone (and on your Apple Watch if you want to take advantage of that feature), an active account, and an Exxon Mobil gas station.

Speedpass+ will tell you where the nearest Exxon Mobil location is. When you arrive, you'll enter the pump number, select your fuel grade, and hit the pay button to authorize the transaction. You don't have to go into the convenience store and try to avoid buying munchies, or even walk up to the pump and pull your bank card out of your wallet. Better yet, you don't have to enter your PIN into one of those shifty looking number pads and risk having your credit card data stolen. With Apple Pay, the payment is secure and so are you.

Apple Pay in Messages

In iOS 11, Apple adds peer-to-peer payment, which is accessible from Messages, and yes, all your transactions are still encrypted.

Apple Pay is an incredibly useful payment service from Apple that wins across all payment services thanks to encrypted transactions. That means, everything you buy at any supported retailer doesn't get tracked by credit card companies and doesn't get sold to interested data tracking companies. It's almost as private as paying with cash.

In iOS 11, Apple Pay is going to be extended to more than just retailers and restaurants. You'll be able to pay your buddy back for covering the cab ride, or tell your sister she still owes you for the cost of the shared hotel you fronted. It's called person to person payment and its available in Messages on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch running iOS 11.

So how does it work?

It's kinda magical. All you have to do is send a chat in the Messages app to someone with a dollar amount in it. When you tap the dollar amount, a tool will pop up allowing you to either request or pay the amount. Tap Pay if you want to send someone money, or Request if you want someone to pay you money.

If you're requesting money, a link to make the payment via Apple Pay will show up in the Messages chat window. If you're paying someone, when you hit the Send button, you'll be prompted to use Touch ID to complete the transaction.

That's it! Payment sent. Payment received.

But where does that money I've received go?

You're not a giant retail store or a credit card company. You're just one person. So, how do you get your money from Apple Pay after your friend sends it to you?

Initially, the cash will store up in your Apple Pay account, sort of like a virtual debit card, that you can use to buy stuff with anywhere it's supported, including retail stores.

If, however, you find yourself wishing you had that dough in your bank account, it's no problem. You can transfer it directly without having to pay a service fee (though you will probably have to wait two days for the transfer to complete).

But my iPhone doesn't have Touch ID, how do I use Apple Pay in Messages?

You don't.

Not only is Apple Pay on the iPhone only available with Touch ID supported devices, it's also only available on iOS 11, which means older iOS devices won't be able to take advantage of the peer-to-peer payment service. It is also only going to be available in the U.S. to start.

Apple Pay in Messages is supported in the following devices running iOS 11 or higher:

  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 6 and later
  • iPad Pro
  • iPad 5th Generation
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad mini 3 and later
  • Apple Watch

When can I start using it?

You and your peeps will have to be running iOS 11 on supported devices, so you won't be able to split the dinner bill with your friends using Apple Pay until later this fall unless you're all running a beta version that it works in.

Apple Pay headed to Denmark, Finland, and more later this year

Apple Pay coming to Denmark, Finland, and more later this year

Apple Pay will be making its way to Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) later this year. Speaking on Apple's Q3 2017 earnings call, Apple CFO Luca Maestri noted the expansion, though did not provide much in the way of details on exactly when those countries should expect the system to arrive.

The reach, usage, and functionality of Apple Pay continue to grow. We launched Apple Pay in Italy in May and the UAE, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden are scheduled to go live before the end of this calendar year.

Maestri also claimed that Apple Pay accounts for 90% of mobile device NFC payment service transactions across the world. Apple is seeing the strongest usage of Apple Pay in international markets, many of which have existing contactless payment infrastructure that is still slowly rolling out in the United States.

Person-to-Person Apple Pay is about to make iMessage even more valuable

Person-to-Person Apple Pay is about to make iMessage even more valuable

Peer-to-peer Apple Pay is coming to iMessage, and it's going to make Apple's messaging platform even more valuable.

Messaging has become a primary interface and platform layer in its own right. There's no telling how long that will last — if it's here to stay or if it's part of a larger transition towards multi-input "assistants"— but today it's used by people around the world not just for text chat but for an ever-increasing number of important transactions. Those range from things as emotionally valuable as emoji and stickers that share our feelings with friends, colleagues, and loved ones, to online orders and payments that get us food, rides, and more.

It's what's made WeChat an inextricable part of life in China, and what led Facebook to pushing Messenger, buying WhatsApp, expanding Instagram, and doing everything it can to shove communications into its attention harvesters. It's also what's apparently frustrating Google and the myriad of chat apps that company was spitting out for a while.

For Apple, it's all about iMessage.

Though proprietary and only available on Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac, that still encompasses hundreds of millions of people around the world ‚ including a growing amount of U.S. teens.

Last year, Apple added app integrations (including the aforementioned stickers), bubble and screen effects, markup, and more to make iMessage more useful and more fun. With iOS 11, the company is adding Apple Pay.

Previously, with Apple Pay, you could tap an NFC terminal to make an in-person transaction or use Safari to make a web purchase. Now, with person-to-person Apple Pay, you can send and receive money directly from and to iMessage.

The implementation is clever: You have to approve initial requests, so no one can spam you with demands for money. Once you do approve a contact, if you get a request, it's super easy to accept it with Apple Pay right inside the iMessage timeline.

Sending money is also breeze. You simply tap it out in iMessage or tell Siri, Apple's intelligent voice assistant, who you want to send money to and how much.

If and when you receive money, it goes into an "Apple Pay Cash" card where you can quickly and easily buffer funds until you decide to make purchases or withdraw the to a traditional account.

I've had a chance to see Apple Pay in iMessage in action and it worked remarkably well. For people already in the Apple ecosystem, especially those like my friends and family who only ever use iMessage, it'll be all but effortless to start using. Better still, it's one less service to have to maintain — and one less security and privacy vector to worry about.

That's because, like everything iMessage, person-to-person Apple Pay is end-to-end encrypted and Apple has absolutely no interest in harvesting, aggregating, and profiting off your transaction data. Who you get money from and who you send money to is your business, not some massive online social search company's. And, frankly, that's become just as if not more important to me than the service itself.

Apple Pay in iMessage will debut this fall in the U.S., but I hope to see it in Canada, the E.U., and everywhere else soon.

What the Apple Watch Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 can do without an iPhone

$

What can your Apple Watch do without your iPhone present? Quite a lot, actually!

Whether you own a Series 0, Series 1, Series 2Apple Watch, or Series 3 Apple Watch, you'll need an iPhone to set it up and use most of its core features. But even so, Apple's wearables are powerful little machines in their own right: If you leave your iPhone at home, you'll still be able to do quite a lot. Here's what the Series 0, Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 Apple Watch models can do without an iPhone present!

It tells the time

Unsurprisingly, timekeeping will continue to work as advertised, and you'll be able to set alarms and timers, see downloaded calendar events, and the like.

When your Apple Watch is near your iPhone, the latter does send it an occasional update to keep the Watch in sync with the global standard, but unless you plan to be away from your smartphone for weeks at a time, your watch shouldn't suffer any degradation.

It logs your workouts

Go out on a run, attend Crossfit, or walk your dog — even without your iPhone present, your Apple Watch continues tracking your fitness. This includes your heartbeat, step counts, stand-sit ratio, breathing, and any workouts you log over that period.

As with most other fitness trackers of this era, the Apple Watch saves this data locally to its onboard storage; it can save up to 30 days of information, though we recommend being careful rather than risk your data with a 29-day hike and no iPhone present. As soon as your iPhone is within Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range again, your Apple Watch will sync the data to your iPhone, and clear its cache.

If you own a Series 0 or Series 1 Apple Watch, you'll only get heartbeat, calories, and basic workout information, as early Apple Watch models have no on-board GPS. You will get estimated distance monitoring, but Apple recommends taking a walk or run with your iPhone present for at least 30 minutes to calibrate for your stride and average pace.

If you own a Series 2 or Series 3 Apple Watch, you'll receive GPS data as well; this allows you to track distance and specific routes (if logging a workout that takes advantage of route-logging).

It lets you pay for items on the go with Apple Pay and the Wallet app

On a run to your local coffee shop? You don't have to worry about sticking some cash in a fanny pack: If the café takes contactless payment, you can use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch.

All Wallet features work while you're away from your iPhone: The Watch stores your Apple Pay cards as unique tokens on the device; when you activate Apple Pay near a contactless reader, the Watch uses the terminal's wireless connection to transmit and confirm your payment.

The same goes with other cards in the Wallet app: Any gift cards, boarding passes, or loyalty cards you've added on your iPhone are automatically synced with the Watch. (Including Starbucks's own barcode-based reloadable gift card.)

It plays your music

With watchOS 4, your Apple Watch will not only be able to play synced music (and podcasts, if you add them to your music library) offline; it'll also automatically add any albums or playlists you've listened to recently, so you always have tunes at your disposal. You will need a set of Bluetooth headphones if you want to really enjoy your music, but there are plenty of inexpensive options out there at this point.

watchOS 4 also integrates the Now Playing screen next to your workout, so you can quickly adjust your music while on a run or other adventure.

If you have the Cellular Series 3 Apple Watch, you'll also be able to stream any of Apple Music's 40,000,000 songs while on the go starting in October.

It showcases your favorite photos

The Apple Watch isn't exactly the best screen for looking at images, but if you're away from your iPhone, it may be the only photo viewer you have. You can sync an album from your iPhone's Photos library (up to 500 images); the photos within can be viewed as a teensy group collage or swipeable individual shots.

The Series 3 connects to your iPhone's cellular network

If you're considering a Cellular Apple Watch Series 3, you'll be able to have full access to all internet-connected apps on your watch even when you leave your iPhone behind. Your Series 3 uses the same carrier network as your iPhone, usually for an additional monthly fee (we've seen $10-$15/month so far), to let you place phone calls, send messages, navigate with maps, find your friends' location, stream Apple Music (in October), use Siri, and access third-party apps.

It connects to Wi-Fi hotspots — if you've been there before with your iPhone

The Series 0, Series 1, and Series 2 Apple Watch don't have a cellular antenna, which means they rely on the iPhone's data connection to use Siri, check your messages, and the like. But they (along with the Cellular-enabled Series 3) do have a Wi-Fi antenna — and if your watch is running watchOS 2 or later, any time you visit a place with a recognized Wi-Fi network, your Apple Watch will automatically hop on that network for internet access.

This feature doesn't always work perfectly, in part because some networks require secondary authorization. Take Starbucks, for instance: On your iPhone or iPad, you can tap "Accept" on the interstitial to continue browsing; the Apple Watch currently offers no such interaction, or a way to enter in passwords for a Wi-Fi network.

Essentially, if you're in an area where you've connected to Wi-Fi with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac previously, and said Wi-Fi hotspot doesn't require a secondary interstitial, your Apple Watch should connect to the internet. You can check if you're connected by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to invoke Control Center.

It runs standalone third-party apps

There are two kinds of Apple Watch apps: iPhone-based and stand-alone. The former requires an iPhone to fully function, as the watch only contains the app's interface. If you load data in the app before leaving your iPhone behind, that data will remain cached, but you'll lose out on any notifications or live updates to complications.

Stand-alone apps, however, can continue rocking long after you've left your iPhone at home. This includes third-party workout apps that use the heart sensor, games, and even internet-based apps—assuming you have access to a saved Wi-Fi hotspot.

What the Series 0, 1, 2, and 3 Apple Watch can't do

While the Apple Watch can do a lot, there are still a few features that won't be functional if you've left your iPhone behind. This includes:

  • Setting up a new Apple Watch (all still require an iPhone to set up and sync to)
  • GPS tracking (Series 0 and 1 only; Series 2 and 3 can)
  • Flights climbed or elevation (Series 0, 1, and 2 only; Series 3 can)
  • Siri (Series 0, 1, and 2 only; Series 3 can)
  • Maps, Messages, and other data-reliant apps, unless you have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot (Series 0, 1, and 2 only; Series 3 can)
  • Third-party apps that are iPhone-based
  • Complications that hook into apps that are iPhone-based
  • More than 30 days of activity data

Person-to-Person Apple Pay to be added to iOS 11 and watchOS 4 in a future update

An individual holds an iPhone in their hands, and an Apple Pay Cash transaction in iMessage is shown on the screen

Though it won't roll out with iOS 11 tomorrow, Apple's new feature is coming later this fall, and it will make it super easy to ask your relatives for money. Or, you know, pay for stuff. How you manage your funds is your business.

Apple confirmed in a post today that along with a future update to iOS 11 and watchOS 4, users will be able to send and receive money instantly with Apple Pay, and it'll be as easy as sending a message or saying a few words to Siri. There won't even be an additional app to download — person-to-person Apple Pay will use the cards you already have in your Wallet.

All users will have to do to send some cash is open iMessage, tap the App Store icon, and find Apple Pay in the app drawer. After that they can set the amount of money to send and select which card in their Wallet the money will come from, then authenticate the payment with Touch ID or Face ID, depending on which iPhone model they have. Users can also ask Siri to send money to a contact.

After that, the money will appear in the recipient's Wallet on their Apple Pay Cash card. Then they can use it instantly to buy anything from a bubble tea to an Uber ride. Or, if they'd prefer, they can transfer it to their bank account. And best of all, if you're using a debit card, this whole process is totally free. The only time it'll cost you is if you use a credit card: according to Recode, you'll be charged a 3% fee, which is standard across all peer-to-peer payment apps.

Unfortunately, person-to-person Apple Pay will only be available in the U.S. upon its release. Hopefully they'll be able to roll out the feature in other countries soon, but as of right now Apple hasn't announced any concrete plans.

Person-to-person Apple Pay payments may be launching in late October

It looks like Apple Pay Cash, the feature that, among other things, will enable person-to-person payments through Apple Pay over iMessage, seems to be headed for a late October release date. In a footnote on its Apple Watch Series 1 site, the company says that the ability to pay friends using Apple Pay is coming in late October.

Apple Pay Cash is a digital debit card that will be kept in Apple Pay alongside your other cards. It's where the money that you've been sent through Apple Pay's person-to-person payments sits until you decide to do something with it. While you'll be able to send the money to your bank account, you can also use it to pay for things just as you would with any other Apple Pay card.

How to use Apple Pay: The ultimate guide

Apple has a mobile payments platform, it ties into credit, debit, loyalty, and store cards, and here's what you need to know about it!

Apple Pay— or Pay if you're fancy — is Apple's mobile payment service. It stores your credit and debit card information on a Secure Element and lets you use it to pay online via apps on the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, or iPad mini 3, or in-store via near-field communications (NFC) on the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus, and even with the Apple Watch and any of the iPhones 5 or 6.

Apple Pay is currently available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and China. Authorization is handled by Touch ID or passcode, card information never leaves the device and is never synced to the cloud. In the release, Wells Fargo's Head of Virtual Channels Jim Smith noted the company's focus on the increasing importance of convenient card-free pay:

According to Forrester, by 2021, mobile payments volume in the U.S. will triple. Our customers are increasingly using mobile to manage their finances and make payments, which makes it ever important for Wells Fargo to provide our more than 20 million mobile banking and mobile wallet customers with a seamless mobile authentication and access experience at our ATMs, online, and in our branches.

Wells Fargo already made headway on the cardless pay front earlier this year when it launched one-time access code technology that allowed customers to access ATMs by using a one-time code generated with the Wells Fargo mobile banking app. Now however, customers can initiate an ATM transaction by simply opening Apple Pay (or another mobile wallet app), holding their phone near an NFC-enabled ATM terminal and inputting their PIN. If you're wondering if your local Wells Fargo ATM has added this feature, just look for a decal with the contactless pay symbol on the front of the machine.

Apple Pay is an easy and secure way to pay when buying merchandise online with your Mac. Here's how to set it up!

The iPhone and Apple Watch have supported Apple Pay for a few years, but now it's the Mac's turn to jump on the secure online payment bandwagon. Whether you have a new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar or are still rocking an older Mac, here's how you can set up Apple Pay and manage your Wallet.

How to set up Apple Pay on your Mac

Before you use Apple Pay on your Mac, you'll need to set it up.

  1. Open the Safari app.
  2. Go to Safari > Preferences.
  3. Click on the Privacy tab.

  4. Select the checkbox next to Apple Pay to allow websites to prompt you with the payment option.

Set up Apple Pay on a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

If you own a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and Touch ID, you'll be able to authorize payments directly from your keyboard. But before you do so, you'll need to add your credit card to Apple Pay. You should have been prompted to do so when first setting up your Mac, but you can still set up Apple Pay at any time through the System Preferences app.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Wallet & Apple Pay icon.

  3. Press the + (plus) button to add a new credit or debit card.
  4. Either position your card in front of your iSight camera to automatically read its number, or manually enter your card information.
  5. Accept your card's terms and conditions.
  6. When your bank authorizes your card, you'll receive a notification letting you know it's ready for Apple Pay.

If you need to change or delete Apple Pay cards, you can do so at any time in the System Preferences app.

Set up Apple Pay on an older Mac

If you're using an older Mac, you'll need to use your iPhone or Apple Watch's stored cards to pay for goods and services.

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Slide the On/Off switch next to Allow Payments on Mac to the On position.

Launch the Settings app, tap on Wallet & Apple Pay, and then tap the on/off switch besdie Allow Payments on Mac.

How to use Apple Pay on your Mac

If you do a lot of online shopping on your Mac, Apple Pay lets you authorize payments made on your Mac via the Touch ID sensor on your MacBook Pro or iPhone, or via Apple Watch — as such, you can say sayonara to typing your credit card information into every site that needs it. Here's how to pay for an item using Apple Pay on your Mac!

How to manage Apple Pay cards on your Mac

Once you've added a card on a Mac that supports the Touch Bar, you can look at it in more detail from the Wallet & Apple Pay section of System Preferences.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Wallet & Apple Pay icon.
  3. To view a card's information — including your device account number, billing address, bank contact info, and transactions — select it from the sidebar.

If you're using Apple Pay with an older Mac via your iPhone or Apple Watch, you'll have to manage your cards on your iPhone.

How to change your default card

If you've added more than one card, you'll be able to change it inside the preferences screen.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Wallet & Apple Pay icon.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, select the card you wish to make your default option from the dropdown menu.

How to remove a card

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Wallet & Apple Pay icon.
  3. Select the card you wish to delete from the sidebar.

  4. Press the - (delete) button at the bottom of the sidebar.
  5. Confirm that you wish to delete the card.

How to manage your contact and shipping information

You can view and change your current contact information (shipping address, email, and phone number) in the settings screen.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Wallet & Apple Pay icon.
  3. Select the Contact and Shipping option at the bottom of the sidebar.

To change your shipping address, email, or phone number, select the option you wish to make default from its respective dropdown menu. This is also where you can add a new address, email, or phone number.

How to manage your billing address

If you wish to change your billing address, you can do so by selecting the card in question.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Wallet & Apple Pay icon.
  3. Select the card you want to change from the sidebar.
  4. Under the Billing Address dropdown, select Add a new Billing Address.

  5. Enter the new billing address and press Save.

How to view recent Apple Pay transactions

Want to see what you've purchased recently with your card and Apple Pay? You can do so from the System Preferences screen.

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on the Wallet & Apple Pay icon.
  3. Select the card you want to view from the sidebar.

  4. Click on the Transactions tab at the top of the screen.

To have your Mac alert you for all transactions made on your Mac with this card, you can also select the Show transaction notifications from [card] checkbox.

How to return a purchase with Apple Pay

Each retailer's policy varies; some may be able to reverse the charges with a click of a button, while others may require you to re-authorize with Touch ID or return in-store.

How to troubleshoot Apple Pay

If you're having trouble getting Apple Pay to accept your card, the simplest solution is to just try entering in your information again. Worst-case, you may just need to call your card issuer. For example, one card we tried to set up never sent the verification code to our phone number on file, so we had to manually retrieve it through the phone system.

Apple Pay at three: 20 markets covering 70% of payments, 4,000 issuers

Three years in, Apple Pay has reached 20 countries covering 70% of card payments from 4,000 issuers.

Apple Pay is everywhere. At least where I live. It's so ubiquitous that, these days, I only notice when the terminal is broken or I end up at one of the very few places that don't take tap... or plastic. That's not to say it's perfect — a few gas pumps still crash on tap, and a few coffee shops always error the first time only to work perfectly the second. But, in the vast majority of cases where it does work, it's idyllic and one of the most dramatic daily examples that the future is increasingly now.

Jennifer Baily, Apple's VP of Apple Pay, help drive that point and more home during her appearance today at the Money 20/20 conference.

That number includes Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), launching in a few days.

What's more, in areas where it's available, 90% of all mobile contactless transactions are conducted using Apple Pay.

The U.S. may not have the tap-to-pay penetration of Canada or some places in Europe, but Apple Pay is now accepted at more than 50% of all retail locations there, including 67 of the top 100 retailers.

Baily announced that Albertsons Companies, one of the largest food and drug retailers in the U.S., is rolling Apple Pay out to 2300 stores, including Safeway. Dick's Sporting goods is now live with Apple Pay in 675 stores. And Saks Fifth Avenue is in the process of deploying Apple Pay as well.

Later this fall, person-to-person Apple Pay will also be coming to iPhone owners in the U.S. I've had the chance to try it at a demo earlier this month and it worked well. From my previous report:

You have to approve [person-to-person Apple Pay] first, so someone can't simply spam you with requests for cash and hope to trigger an automated response. (Sorry, colleagues who've tried!). Once it is approved, though, it works intelligently to detect potential triggers and offer itself when and as needed. For example, if one of my buddies messages me that my share of beverages is $42, iMessage could ask me if I want to send it to her right there, right then.

Sending money is also a breeze. You simply tap it out in iMessage or tell Siri, Apple's intelligent voice assistant, who you want to send money to and how much. If and when you receive money, it goes into an "Apple Pay Cash" card stored in Wallet where you can quickly and easily buffer funds until you decide to make purchases or withdraw to a traditional account.

According to Baily, thousands of our Apple employees have been testing person-to-person as part of an internal beta already

Can't wait for that part to go global.

How to use Apple Pay on iPhone X

How do you pay with Apple Pay in stores and on your iPhone X? With the Side button and Face ID!

Apple Pay on iPhone X works just like Apple Pay on any iPhone — with two exceptions. First, the Home button is gone so you now use the Side button to bring it up. Second, Touch ID is gone so you now use Face ID to authorize it. Depending on your workflow, that's either going to be almost no change for you... or a pretty big change. Here's how it works!

How do you pay with Apple Pay on iPhone X at retail?

Using Apple Pay on iPhone X at retail stores like coffee shops, pharmacies, fast food outlets, etc. is very similar to using it on any other iPhone. You simply need to substitute the Side button for the Home button, and Face ID for Touch ID.

  1. Double click the Side button to bring up Apple Pay.
  2. Look at your iPhone X to authenticate with Face ID.
  3. Switch cards if you want to use one other than your default.
  4. Tap your iPhone X to the pay terminal. (Or just bring it close.)

From that point on, everything is processed the same.

Can you tap the terminal first and then use Face ID to authorize Apple Pay on iPhone X?

No. If you tap the terminal first you'll still get the interface hint asking you to double-click the Side button twice to initiate Apple Pay. That's to establish intent.

Otherwise, someone with a skimmer or beacon could walk around trying to trick you into a transaction or data capture while you're looking at your phone.

If you're used to tapping the terminal first then authorizing with Touch ID to save yourself a double-click, you'll have to switch to the double-click first method. Yeah. Ugh.

(I've always and only used the double-click first method, previously with the Home button, now with Side. If you're like me, there'll be no change in pay flow.)

How do you pay with Apple Pay on iPhone X on-device?

Apple Pay in-app or on the web is similar as well, though the experience can and will vary slightly from app to app and site to site.

  1. Add your item(s) and go to your bag/checkout.
  2. Tap the Buy with Apple Pay button and/or Apple Pay Pay button.
  3. Double Click the Side button.
  4. Look at your iPhone X to authenticate with Face ID.

From that point on, everything is processed the same.

How do you pay with Apple Pay on iPhone X if Face ID can't recognize you?

If, for whatever reason, Face ID can't authenticate you:

  1. Tap Pay with Passcode.
  2. Enter your Passcode
  3. Tap your iPhone X to the pay terminal. (Or just bring it close.)

Chipotle's new order-ahead app lets you pay with Apple Pay

Chipotle has completely redesigned its app for iOS and Android devices, making it even easier to grab a burrito bowl on the go. Best of all, the app now supports Apple Pay.

Chipotle Mexican Grill announced today that they've released an all-new mobile app that allows customers to more effortlessly get their Chipotle fix. The app has been given a more minimalist and accessible design, and is chock full of new features that make the ordering process faster and more efficient.

Curt Garner, Chipotle's Chief Digital and Information Officer, described what inspired the app's functionality in a statement:

Our guests are increasingly mobile and on the go, and they want and deserve the same intuitive, accurate and convenient ordering experience they get in our restaurants. That is exactly what our app delivers. The new app is just one of the steps we're taking to improve the guest experience through technology and innovation.

With the new app, Chipotle customers can do the following:

  • Reorder favorite orders quickly: The app saves your order history, so if you want those really bomb sofritas tacos you had last week, you don't have to go through the whole process of rebuilding your order from memory. You can also save certain orders to your Favorites, so if you're the type of person who has a "usual," you can select it with a single tap.
  • Receive, store, and redeem Chipotle offers: If you've got any coupons you'd like to use, you can add them to the "View/Redeem Offers" section of the app and apply them to whatever order you'd like.
  • Utilize Apple Pay and Android Pay: The new app supports both Apple Pay and Android Pay, so you no longer need to go through the rigamarole of inputting your card info. Instead, you can just pay with whatever cards or bank accounts are stored in your virtual wallet.
  • Locate nearby Chipotle stores: Maybe you've recently moved to a new city and you've yet to memorize where all your local Chipotles are. Maybe you've lived in the same place all your life, but you've never tried this "Chipolte" your children keep talking about. No matter your reason, you can now easily find the location nearest to you.

Chipotle's release also mentions that most restaurants are now equipped with a dedicated prep line specifically for online orders, so using the app should still get you your food in good time.

The new Chipotle app is free, and is available starting today. Get it here and get your hands on your weekly chips and guac fix ASAP:

Walmart threatens to mislead consumers about U.S. mobile payments

Walmart gets misleading headline comparing U.S. adoption to Apple Pay

'Walmart Pay Threatens to Surpass Apple in U.S. Mobile Payments' is a sensational headline — too bad the content beneath it is pure FUD.

Walmart doesn't support Apple Pay. After its previous CurrentC scheme fell apart, the giant retailer rolled out its own, derivative, Walmart Pay system inside its iOS and Android apps. It gave Walmart complete ownership of the transaction pipeline — something a company that hates losing even the percentage typically charged by credit cards considers to be critical. But it doesn't provide the consistency or ease of use of more universal, device-level payments systems like Apple Pay.

That probably explains why we're seeing headlines and articles like this, which read more like Walmart PR than actual business reporting. From Bloomberg:

Available in 4,774 stores, Walmart Pay is enrolling tens of thousands of new users a day, up from thousands four or five months ago, said Daniel Eckert, who runs the business. Two-thirds of the customers who try it also use it a second time within 21 days, he said, giving him confidence Walmart Pay will surpass Apple Pay in the U.S. in terms of use by shoppers in stores where they're accepted.

"If daily enrollments don't slow down, I think that's pretty well in the cards shortly," said Eckert, senior vice president for services and digital acceleration. "I would have to imagine we are getting pretty close."

Let's playback and zoom in on that for a minute:

Walmart Pay will surpass Apple Pay in the U.S. in terms of use by shoppers in stores where they're accepted.

The numbers are from Pymnts. But they're an apples-to-bananas mess. Apple Pay isn't accepted at Walmart, so a direct comparison is already difficult. (Walmart's Jet.com does accept Apple Pay, but I haven't found any recent usage stats.)

On the surface, that makes it read like Walmart is just playing word games to try and get attention — and nothing gets more attention than spoonfeeding Apple and a negative headline. Which is what you'd expect from Walmart marcomms. But it's not news and certainly not anything relevant to Apple, Apple Pay or, you know, any retailer or transaction outside of Walmart.

It's like saying Apple Pay smokes Walmart Pay at Apple Retail. Two thumbs up! Great job! Not news!

Update: Mike Wuertle, writing for Apple Insider:

The data for the Bloomberg story, and WalMart's claim of dominance was collected from a Pymnts survey. Ignored by both are other metrics about digital payments from the survey, claiming that 24.5 percent of those questioned claimed to have tried Apple Pay, with only 5.08 percent having used WalMart Pay.

And:

According to the survey data, an "eligible transaction" for Apple Pay means people with an iPhone that shopped at a store that accepts Apple Pay. For WalMart Pay, eligible transactions are only drawn from people that shopped at WalMart.

The reaction to the story on Twitter was interesting:

The reaction I got was similar:

Bottom line, I don't think there's a story here and if there is, Bloomberg didn't press Walmart or offer facts enough to tell it.

Meanwhile, I'm still using Apple Pay all day, every day in Canada, where it's nigh-ubiquitous. I was even surprised how many places in the U.S. took it when I was visiting New York City last week. Everything from the Taxi to the hotel, the vending machine in the hotel, and the artisanal coffee shop across from the hotel.

Walmart might still be holding out — which is a pity for customers who'd benefit from the consistency and convenience, and their own points of sale, which would benefit from the transactional rapidity — but with 20 countries ramped up, and upwards of 90% of all mobile contactless transactions globally being done using Apple Pay where it's an option, I think Apple's doing just fine.

Get free Postmates delivery with this Apple Pay promo deal

A space gray iPhone resting on a table with the Postmates app pulled up on the screen

If you sign up for a Postmates Unlimited subscription using Apple Pay, you can get free delivery until the end of 2017. Bring on the copious amounts of Chinese food and fancy salad! (No? Just me?)

Apple sent out an email to Apple Pay customers today stating that if you sign up for Postmates Unlimited with Apple Pay by November 23, you'll get free deliveries on orders costing $20 or more until the end of the year, without paying the $9.99 monthly subscription fee. So essentially, you're getting a free month-long trial of the prime tier as a reward for checking it out. Not bad, right?

If you're not already familiar with Postmates, it's essentially a food delivery service that allows you to order food from restaurants in your area — even if those restaurants don't have a dedicated delivery service themselves. However, delivery fees increase depending on how far away the restaurant is or how busy Postmates carriers currently are — a bit like how with ride sharing services rates go up the more people are attempting to request a lift. Under normal circumstances, the Postmates Unlimited subscription tier allows users to get free delivery no matter the circumstances for a flat monthly fee of $9.99. However, with Apple's promo deal, that fee will be totally waived until 2018 begins. And honestly, even when the fee is reinstated, it's still a great deal — delivery fees can be $6 or more per order, so if you tend to use Postmates often, Postmates Unlimited is a smart move no matter how you look at it.

You can sign up for Postmates Unlimited by heading over to the Postmates website or downloading the Postmates app from the App Store.

How to use rewards cards with Apple Pay and the Wallet app

$

Ditch the keychain cards and excess plastic by using Apple Pay and the Wallet app instead.

I love using Apple Pay around stores in my neighborhood: It's quick, easy, and almost always gets a delighted reaction from employees. I recently upped my Apple Pay game, however, by jumping into the fun world of digital rewards and loyalty cards.

These cards have been supported on the iPhone since iOS 9, and make it extra-easy to earn bonus points on your purchases at select stores. Sadly, I have to emphasize "select" here — adoption from merchants has been slow, even though they're easy and delightfully fun to use.

All of the programs that currently support Apple Pay Rewards and Loyalty cards

Unlike many barcode-style Wallet passes, rewards and loyalty cards have specific code within them that allows those cards to automatically pop up on Apple Pay scanners before you pay with a credit or debit card. In contrast, passes like Starbucks Rewards can be added to your Wallet app, but you have to manually select the card and hold it out to be scanned.

These are the rewards and loyalty cards we know of that are currently supported in the Wallet app:

  • Walgreens Balance Rewards
  • Coca-Cola Vending Pass
  • Kohl's Yes2You Rewards

Know of other programs we're missing? Let us know in the comments!

How to add a Rewards card to the Wallet app

Note: This process varies depending on the program you've signed up with, but usually involves downloading the merchant's app. Below, we'll walk you through signing up with the Walgreens Balance Rewards card.

  1. Download the appropriate app for your merchant.
  2. Open and log in to the app with your rewards login.
  3. Tap on the link to Show Your Rewards Card.

  4. Select the Add to Apple Wallet button.
  5. Choose whether to add a Preferred Store Location.
  6. The initial digital rewards card will display. Press Next.

  7. Choose whether to Automatically Select the card when visiting the merchant's location. This will automatically load the pass before your credit or debit card when you pay with Apple Pay.
  8. Press Done.

How to use an official Apple Pay Rewards card at the store

  1. Enter the store and shop for your items, per usual.
  2. During checkout, pull out your iPhone or Apple Watch.
  3. If you've added a Preferred Location, you'll be prompted with an alert to open the card on your Lock screen.

  4. Move your iPhone or Apple Watch within a foot of the payment terminal to bring up the payment screen; if that doesn't work, double press the Home button to display it.
  5. If you've chosen for your rewards card to Automatically Select, it will display first as an option for scanning, followed by your credit or debit card.
  6. Authenticate your purchase with Touch ID.

How to use a digital rewards card from the Wallet app without Apple Pay

If the store in question doesn't have an Apple Pay terminal, you can still have the cashiers scan your digital rewards card.

  1. Enter the store and shop for your items, per usual.
  2. During checkout, pull out your iPhone or Apple Watch.
  3. If you've added a Preferred Location, you'll be prompted with an alert to open the card on your Lock screen.
  4. If you haven't, open the Wallet app on your iPhone or Apple Watch and select your rewards pass.

  5. Tap on the button at the bottom of the pass that says Show Code. If you don't have an official Rewards pass, this barcode may already be automatically displayed.
  6. Have your cashier scan the resulting barcode.
  7. Pay for your item with a physical credit card, debit card, or cash.

Square to waive $350 in fees for businesses that promote Apple Pay

Square will waive fees and offer a free marketing kit in order to help boost Apple Pay use.

Square has announced a new initiative that would let small businesses process $12,000 worth of payments made with Apple Pay for free, saving these businesses up to $350 in Square costs. Businesses will, of course, need Square's NFC-equipped card reader, as well as Square's free Apple Pay marketing kit, which encourages customers to use the payment system.

From Square:

Sellers can request a free Apple Pay marketing kit with collateral encouraging customers to pay with their iPhone or Apple Watch and staff training materials to educate employees about accepting Apple Pay. The processing credit is available once sellers have set up their countertop display for verification.

The company previously experimented with a similar program in Portland, Oregon in 2016. Over the course of the trial, participating Portland Square retailers saw the number of contactless payments triple.

While Square's most recent card reader accepts credit and debit cards equipped with EMV chips in addition to contactless payment methods like Apple Pay, these cards offer a slow, cumbersome experience next to Apple Pay.

Apple Pay will soon arrive in Taiwan with support from seven banks

Apple Pay will come to Taiwan soon, though a launch date hasn't been announced.

Apple will soon be rolling out Apple Pay in Taiwan. While the company has yet to set a launch date, it has announced partnerships with seven of the island's banks for the contactless payment system.

On its Taiwanese site, Apple lists partnerships with Cathay United Bank, CTBC Bank, E.Sun Commercial Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Taipei Fubon Commercial Bank, Taishin International Bank and Union Bank of Taiwan. The company will undoubtedly add more banks to the lineup over time. In other countries, Apple has also made deals with credit card companies like American Express while agreements with banks were still being hammered out.

Taiwan will be the fourteenth territory to see the arrival of Apple Pay, and the sixth in the Asia-Pacific region, since its launch in late 2014.
