The Apple Watch 'WOW' moment

$

Fitness is fantastic but there's one thing Apple Watch does that really feels like magic.

"How do you want to pay for that?""VISA."Tap. Beep."Wow, that's amazing. Is that your watch?"Smile."Boarding pass?""On my watch!"Scan."Wow, that's incredible! Apple Watch?"Nod."Here's your coffee!"Scan.""Wow! I've gotta get one of those!. "Want me to pay for gas?""Nah, I got it."Tap."What is that, magic?"

Long before Watch was even announced, I began to wonder about what I'd want from Apple on my wrist. Convenience was my killer feature. If Watch could save me from having to reach for my phone in order to do a few important, frequent, yet simple things, it'd be the equivalent of my phone letting me leave the house without my computer.

But convenience is a hard feature to demo in the wild.

When iPhone first came out, it was cool but it wasn't some abstract coolness that made people's eyes light up. It was the specific coolness of pinch-to-zoom in Photos or Maps, or Cover Flow in iPod. Those were immediately, undeniably cool.

When Apple Watch first came out, I had trouble finding a similar demo. It didn't help that Watch wasn't a minimally delightful product in the same way as iPhone. Apple introduced it with a bevy of features which made isolating one as the go-to demo harder: Mickey may have made people smile but it didn't make them want to immediately rush out and buy.

With Watch Series 2 and watchOS 3, Apple found their focus in fitness. The product still does a lot more, of course, but the messaging and advertising has been all about those rings and workouts.

For all the greater clarity and coherence, though, the Activity Rings and Workouts still don't make a great demo. Don't get me wrong — I love closing all my Activity Rings every day and the motivation that the new sharing features provide, but if you just show those rings to people they don't get it at a glance, not like they did with pinch-to-zoom.

Then, over the last few weeks, something started happening. I went to to Apple Pay for lunch at a local restaurant and instead of the man saying "Wow!", the man behind the counter held up his own Apple Watch. Instead of the woman at Air Canada gate being shocked when I scanned my boarding pass, she held up her Watch to show me she'd just gotten one too. Instead of the guy at the Starbucks drive through thinking my Apple Watch was cool, as he reached out to scan my digital card, I saw he was wearing one of his own.

A photo posted by Rene Ritchie (@reneritchie) on

By some estimates, Apple sold 5.6 million Watches over the holidays— a quarter where Watch was and remains bafflingly constrained. That could bring the total number of Watches sold so far to a 25 million. I'm sure the new fitness focus and campaigns had something to do with that and I'm sure when people use those feature they love them.

But Apple Pay and Wallet? That's the "Wow!" moment. That's the demo I'd been looking for and the one that's been right in front of me this whole time. It's what my friends, who recently go Apple Watch, are messaging me all excited about. It's what the guy at the coffee shop counter loved when I stepped up, tapped, paid, and was on my way while the person beside me was still counting out cash. It's the magic.

Fitness is cool. Fitness is fantastic. Fitness absolutely makes our lives better. I love the first and latest ads Apple's done for Watch around fitness. But I can't help but wish for a really great Apple Watch ad centered around Apple Pay and Wallet next.

Paying at retail or at a drive-through or while jogging past a corner store. Getting your movie tickets, boarding your plane, or picking up your loyalty points. I'd even fold in opening the door to your hotel room and unlocking your Mac. An ad like that, done with the usual Apple panache, would make the convenience of Watch manifest.

Apple has succeeded in making paying for things not just cool but fun as well. Paying for things. Fun. That's something to show off.

My guess is we haven't seen a lot of this yet because the U.S. has only just begun to adopt tap-to-pay technology. That'll change, though. And as it does, I think we'll see a lot more of those "wow" moments, and Apple will sell a lot more Watches.

Apple Pay chief warns Australian banks to get behind mobile payments or risk losing customers

Apple Pay is big in Australia, even if some banks aren't willing to adopt it.

Apple Pay's chief, Jennifer Bailey, is sending a stern warning to five Australian banks unwilling to negotiate with the company over the nascent payment service, saying that customers will begin looking for greener, more mobile payment-friendly pastures.

In an interview with Australia's Financial Review newspaper, Bailey said that the banks don't understand the value proposition of Apple Pay, and that by ostensibly paying lip service to their customers by demanding access to the iPhone's NFC chip, they are missing an important opportunity.

The banks are fighting Apple because they are concerned about the tech giant's ability to capture the market for digital wallets – cards stored on smartphones – which is expected to grow strongly.

Bailey told AFR that after applying to Australia's regulator to enter into a collective boycott of Apple Pay, the companies have been unwilling to negotiate with Apple directly, and therefore haven't been able to learn about customer benefits of the program. The banks are demanding that Apple open up the NFC capabilities of its iPhones so that they can provide payment services of their own in apps available through the App Store. Bailey says that's not possible and never will be.

Apple says it will never be able to grant the applicant banks' request for their own, proprietary digital wallets to access the "near field communications" chip in the iPhone (which communicates with payments terminals), because this would result in users having to manually, through the phone settings, change the app communicating with the NFC, a clunky process which would reduce take-up.

The one big Australian bank that has adopted Apple Pay, ANZ, says that over a quarter of its customers are now using Apple Pay, and that 10 times more customers use payments with their Apple devices than on Android Pay.

Other banks, like ING Direct and Macquarie Bank, will enable Apple Pay this month for their customers, and Bailey says that as more institutions sign up for the service, Australians will make even louder demands of their obstinate banks — or leave altogether.

Jaguar and Shell team up on in-car payment system for gas

Owners of certain Jaguar models will soon be able to pay for gas from their cars.

Jaguar and Shell have announced a new in-car payment system for use at gas stations. The new shell app, which will be part of an update to Jaguar's F-PACE, XF, and XE car models, allows drivers to use Apple Pay or PayPal to pay for gas at the pump without needing to pull out their credit or debit card.

The system is rolling out first in the UK, according to Jaguar:

Rather than using a card at the pump, or queuing in the forecourt shop, owners who install the Shell app can simply drive up to any pump at a Shell service station (initially in the UK and then globally) and use the vehicle's touchscreen to select how much fuel they require and pay using PayPal or Apple Pay.

After you pay, your electronic receipt will appear on screen, and will also be emailed to your right away. In addition to PayPal and Apple Pay, the system will also support Android Pay later in 2017.

E la Carte's latest terminal lets you use Apple Pay to pay for your meal right at your table.

E la Carte, the company behind a number of restaurant-focused tools, has announced a new Apple Pay-compatible payment terminal meant to be installed at tables, the PrestoPrime EMV Terminal. The terminal would allow customers to use contactless payment systems like Apple Pay, as well as magnetic stripe and EMV chip credit and debit cards, right at their table.

From E la Carte:

"Brick-and-mortar payments and security requirements have changed dramatically in the last 5 years. We wanted to take a leadership role in helping our partners navigate these volatile waters, while also generating direct operating benefits that offer a real hard dollar ROI to recoup their investment," said Raj Suri, CEO and founder of E la Carte. "Combining robust security with a frictionless user experience, PrestoPrime EMV sets the bar as the best tabletop platform available to restaurant operators."

E la Carte has not yet announced availability for the PrestoPrime EMV Terminal, though it will demonstrate the product at a restaurant industry conference in April.

Payment processor WePay has announced its support for Apple Pay on the web.

Online payment platform WePay, which offers integrated payments for the likes of GoFundMe, Zoho, Freshbooks, and other services, has announced support for Apple Pay. This allows you to use Apple Pay when checking out of online stores powered by WePay, both on the desktop and mobile web.

From WePay:

WePay's launch of the Apple Pay and Android Pay products means platform customers can now pay for goods and services with just a single touch — gone are the days of having to manually enter payment and shipping information at checkout.

Apple Pay on the web arrived last fall with iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, allowing customers to use Apple Pay in online stores just as they would at brick-and-mortar retail locations. Other online payment backends, including Stripe and Shopify, have added support for Apple Pay on the web since launch.

What's new in Apple Pay? person to person payments in Messages

$

In iOS 11, Apple adds peer-to-peer payment, which is accessible from Messages, and yes, all your transactions are still encrypted.

Apple Pay is an incredibly useful payment service from Apple that wins across all payment services thanks to encrypted transactions. That means, everything you buy at any supported retailer doesn't get tracked by credit card companies and doesn't get sold to interested data tracking companies. It's almost as private as paying with cash.

In iOS 11, Apple Pay is going to be extended to more than just retailers and restaurants. You'll be able to pay your buddy back for covering the cab ride, or tell your sister she still owes you for the cost of the shared hotel you fronted. It's called person to person payment and its available in Messages on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch running iOS 11.

So how does it work?

It's kinda magical. All you have to do is send a chat in the Messages app to someone with a dollar amount in it. When you tap the dollar amount, a tool will pop up allowing you to either request or pay the amount. Tap Pay if you want to send someone money, or Request if you want someone to pay you money.

If you're requesting money, a link to make the payment via Apple Pay will show up in the Messages chat window. If you're paying someone, when you hit the Send button, you'll be prompted to use Touch ID to complete the transaction.

That's it! Payment sent. Payment received.

But where does that money I've received go?

You're not a giant retail store or a credit card company. You're just one person. So, how do you get your money from Apple Pay after your friend sends it to you?

Initially, the cash will store up in your Apple Pay account, sort of like a virtual debit card, that you can use to buy stuff with anywhere it's supported, including retail stores.

If, however, you find yourself wishing you had that dough in your bank account, it's no problem. You can transfer it directly without having to pay a service fee (though you will probably have to wait two days for the transfer to complete).

But my iPhone doesn't have Touch ID, how do I use Apple Pay in Messages?

You don't.

Not only is Apple Pay on the iPhone only available with Touch ID supported devices, it's also only available on iOS 11, which means older iOS devices won't be able to take advantage of the peer-to-peer payment service. It is also only going to be available in the U.S. to start.

Apple Pay in Messages is supported in the following devices running iOS 11 or higher:

  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 6 and later
  • iPad Pro
  • iPad 5th Generation
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad mini 3 and later
  • Apple Watch

When can I start using it?

You and your peeps will have to be running iOS 11 on supported devices, so you won't be able to split the dinner bill with your friends using Apple Pay until later this fall unless you're all running a beta version that it works in.

Apple Pay will be making its way to Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) later this year. Speaking on Apple's Q3 2017 earnings call, Apple CFO Luca Maestri noted the expansion, though did not provide much in the way of details on exactly when those countries should expect the system to arrive.

The reach, usage, and functionality of Apple Pay continue to grow. We launched Apple Pay in Italy in May and the UAE, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden are scheduled to go live before the end of this calendar year.

Maestri also claimed that Apple Pay accounts for 90% of mobile device NFC payment service transactions across the world. Apple is seeing the strongest usage of Apple Pay in international markets, many of which have existing contactless payment infrastructure that is still slowly rolling out in the United States.

With iOS 11.2, you can now send payments directly to people using Messages and Apple Pay. Here's how.

Apple Pay Cash is Apple's system for sending and receiving payments with Apple Pay through iMessage. Setting up Apple Pay Cash also adds the new Apple Pay Cash card to the Wallet app on your iPhone, letting you use the balance of that card to make payments in physical stores or online just as you would with any other credit or debit card attached to Apple Pay.

Here's how you go about setting up and using Apple Pay Cash on your iPhone or iPad.

How to set up Apple Pay Cash

First things first, you have to actually set up Apple Pay Cash.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Apple Pay Cash.

  4. Tap Continue.
  5. Tap Agree.
  6. Wait for the rest of the setup to complete automatically.

How to verify your identity for Apple Pay

To make sure the process of using Apple Pay Cash goes smoothly, you'll want to verify your identity.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Apple Pay Cash.

  4. Tap Verify Identity.
  5. Tap Continue.
  6. Enter your First and Last names.

  10. Enter the last four digits of your social security number and date of birth.
  11. Tap Next.

How to add money to your Apple Pay Cash card

You can send payments through Messages with Apple Pay without a balance on your Apple Pay Cash card, but you might want to add some money all the same.

  1. Open Wallet on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on your Apple Pay Cash card.
  3. Tap the i button in the bottom-right corner.

  4. Tap Add Money.
  5. Enter the amount of money you want to add to your card using either the pre-defined buttons or by entering a custom amount on the number pad.
  6. Tap Add.

  7. Authorize the transfer from an Apple Pay-linked debit card. On iPhone 8 and older, you authorize with Touch ID, while on iPhone X, you double-click the side button to activate Face ID for authorization.
  8. Tap Done.

How to send your Apple Pay Cash balance to a bank account

Any money your receive on your Apple Pay Cash card can be sent from your card to the bank account of your choice.

  1. Open Wallet on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on your Apple Pay Cash card.
  3. Tap the i button in the bottom-right corner.

  4. Tap Transfer to Bank.
  5. Tap Add Bank Account.
  6. Enter the Routing and Account numbers for your bank account.

  7. Tap Next.

  9. Tap Next.

  10. Enter the amount that you want to transfer to your bank.
  11. Tap Transfer.
  12. Authorize the transfer from an Apple Pay-linked debit card. On iPhone 8 and older, you authorize with Touch ID, while on iPhone X, you double-click the side button to activate Face ID for authorization.

  13. Tap Done.
  14. Tap Done.

How to send payments using Apple Pay Cash

Sending money to your friends and family in Messages is oddly akin to sending a sticker.

  1. Open Messages on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on a conversation with the person you'd like to send money to or start a new iMessage conversation.
  3. Tap the Apple Pay button at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Tap the - or + buttons to select an amount.
  5. Tap Show Keypad if you want to enter a specific amount.
  6. Enter your specific amount.

  7. Tap Pay.
  8. Tap the send button (looks like an arrow in a black circle).
  9. Authorize the payment from an Apple Pay-linked debit card. On iPhone 8 and older, you authorize with Touch ID, while on iPhone X, you double-click the side button to activate Face ID for authorization.

How to request a payment with Apple Pay Cash

Of course, you can also request a payment through Messages.

  1. Open Messages on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on a conversation with the person you'd like to request money from or start a new iMessage conversation.
  3. Tap the Apple Pay button at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Tap the - or + buttons to select an amount.
  5. Tap Show Keypad if you want to enter a specific amount.
  6. Enter your specific amount.

  7. Tap Request.
  8. Tap the send button (looks like an arrow in a black circle).

AppleCoin: Why Apple's next big move could be its own currency

$

The iPhone is so successful that it practically prints money. Which gives me an idea: what if Apple combined Apple Pay with cryptocurrency to actually print money?

Transcript of the video below.

So I have a crazy idea for a new Apple product: Money. Actual money. You know, digital currency like Bitcoin?

If you're not already familiar, Bitcoin is what they call cryptocurrency. It's basically computer money. Unlike regular money, it isn't issued by a government and there's no traditional banking system, so it's completely decentralized. It's also open sourced, so anybody could make a copy and make their own version. Banks don't like it because it takes them out of the equation, and governments don't like it because it means they no longer have control over the currency. But if banks and governments don't like it, you can safely assume it's probably a good idea.

But digital currency is also really really hard to explain: Like, instead of a government issuing new currency, bitcoins are produced by its users through a process called mining where computers spend a whole bunch of processing power to generate new bitcoins (and that is where baby bitcoins come from). It's a complicated mess of technology that can be really tricky for non-technical people to fully understand.

So while bitcoin is rapidly growing in popularity and value, there's no real danger of it taking over the world's currency system. Yet it kind of reminds me of Linux: It seems like every year since 1998 has been "the year of Linux on the desktop." While Linux is great for lots of stuff (and you may have even heard of it), it never really gained mainstream popularity. (Well, sort of.) What is Linux? Well, it's a free and open-source operating system based on UNIX.

And what is Unix? Well, UNIX is another operating system, mostly used by big mainframes and other fancy servers; there's also another free open-source version called FreeBSD. The FreeBSD people and the Linux people have pretty similar visions, but they still can't stop arguing with each other. Bottom line: They're both free and they're both basically Unix.

Linux and FreeBSD are built on a pretty cool idea: If you take something super stable and well understood, and make the source code available to everyone, you can make a more secure and stable operating system. The trouble is that it's also technical and complicated and difficult to use, so normal people have a tough time adopting (it not unlike Bitcoin).

But then Apple came along in 2001 and released Mac OS X: A beautiful, modern operating system with a flashy user interface and support for most popular commercial software. (Sorry, gamers.) It also happens to be built on FreeBSD. Now every Mac runs UNIX under the hood, and so does every iPhone. Even Google's answer to the iPhone, Android, is a variant of Linux. So there's a decent chance that you just went from not knowing what UNIX is to realizing you're holding some of it in your hand right now.

There's a popular old argument that Apple just acts like they invented things that others have already been doing, but I think this is the piece they're missing: Apple rarely shoots for being the first of anything. They didn't make the first computer, the first music player, the first smartphone, the first tablet, or the first smart watch. But even if you don't like Apple, you can't deny their influence in each of those categories. So Apple doesn't need to invent digital currency: They just need to make it accessible, understandable, usable, and desirable.

Okay, that sounds great on paper, but why would Apple do this?

The iPhone isn't just popular: It's the most successful and popular product in history. Nothing else even comes close. That success has the funny side effect of making everything else Apple does seem small. For example: The Apple watch isn't just the best-selling smart watch — it's the best-selling watch, period. Imagine being so dominant in a single category that your other successes just go overlooked!

Unfortunately, this leads some people on Wall Street to assume that Apple's success can't possibly last — we'll just ignore Apple's historic charge toward being the world's first trillion-dollar company. The common line is that Apple stopped innovating, but I think what they really mean is that Apple hasn't put out anything as big as the iPhone, which is true. The iPad didn't match the iPhone. The Apple watch didn't match the iPhone. But nothing has, and I don't think anything can. Maybe this statement will seem quaint in a few years, but I can't imagine a single product with the potential to be as successful or as dominant as the iPhone other than... well, money itself. With the iPhone, Apple basically is printing money. The only thing they could do to generate cash even faster would be to literally print money.

Apple's already dabbling in digital currency: Apple Pay is here today and accepted at a ton of shops with pretty reasonable and favorable rates to the merchants. You can also pay people via iMessage for free in the U.S., but that's nothing new. Facebook lets you send money, Square and Venmo do the same thing; NFC payments have been around for years. This is just Apple doing what they do best: Taking a complicated system and making it easy and desirable.

The user benefits are easy to market: security. Apple Coin would require Touch ID or Face ID, so it's even more secure than your actual bank. No need to transfer money internationally, no fees — in fact, no banking fees of any kind, ever. Oh, and there's an idea maybe — with Apple Coin, there's a mining feature, so your phone or Mac could be generating money while they charge and the more devices you own, the more money you make.

Plus, there's lots of interesting things about digital currency from a social perspective, which is kind of Apple's jam. Developing nations and emerging markets may not always have the most stable governments or banking systems, which is why Bitcoin is already finding a foothold there; now, assume you could also get a physical debit card that automatically converted to the local currency into money you could use in your Apple Coin account. You'd at least try it, right?

For most people, this solves way more problems than it creates. Apple also loves owning their entire supply chain: They bought a processor company just to have more control over the way their chips get made, and now the iPhone X is the most powerful mobile device on the planet.

Now that digital currency is a thing, it's not absurd to imagine the benefits to Apple of having control over the money itself. For example, Apple expects to make about eighty-five billion dollars in the first quarter of 2018; even if we assume they get a really sweet deal on credit card processing fees and somehow escaped paying for any per-transaction fees, that's still like a billion dollars in fees — I mean, probably. I'm terrible at math. So even if we ignore the money they make from the increasing value of their own currency, there are still benefits to tying it directly with our ecosystem and the mind share benefits of more people being aware of and using Apple products and services. It would be worth doing it to save a billion dollars.

This is what Apple is really great at: Taking complex technical systems and making them more accessible to everyone. They did it with computers, music players, phones, tablets, smartwatches. Digital currency is already out there and poised to be both massively disruptive and massively profitable for whomever finds a way to take it mainstream, and I can think of no better company to pull it off than Apple.

Apple's new security guide covers Face ID, Apple Pay Cash, AutoFill, and more

Apple's security white paper now covers iOS 11.2, and that means you can learn more about Face ID, Apple Pay Cash, and AutoFill for Apps right now.

Apple is getting better and better at explaining deeply technical topics in highly approachable ways. Nowhere is that exemplified more than in the company's security white papers. The iOS 11.2 version has just gone live, and it includes more on Face ID, Apple Pay Cash, and AutoFill for Apps.

From iOS Security iOS 11, January 2018:

Apple designed the iOS platform with security at its core. When we set out to create the best possible mobile platform, we drew from decades of experience to build an entirely new architecture. We thought about the security hazards of the desktop environment, and established a new approach to security in the design of iOS. We developed and incorporated innovative features that tighten mobile security and protect the entire system by default. As a result, iOS is a major leap forward in security for mobile devices.

Every iOS device combines software, hardware, and services designed to work together for maximum security and a transparent user experience. iOS protects not only the device and its data at rest, but the entire ecosystem, including everything users do locally, on networks, and with key Internet services.

iOS and iOS devices provide advanced security features, and yet they're also easy to use. Many of these features are enabled by default, so IT departments don't need to perform extensive configurations. And key security features like device encryption aren't configurable, so users can't disable them by mistake. Other features, such as Face ID, enhance the user experience by making it simpler and more intuitive to secure the device.

This document provides details about how security technology and features are implemented within the iOS platform. It will also help organizations combine iOS platform security technology and features with their own policies and procedures to meet their specific security needs. This document is organized into the following topic areas:

  • System security: The integrated and secure software and hardware that are the platform for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
  • Encryption and data protection: The architecture and design that protects user data if the device is lost or stolen, or if an unauthorized person attempts to use or modify it.
  • App security: The systems that enable apps to run securely and without compromising platform integrity.
  • Network security: Industry-standard networking protocols that provide secure authentication and encryption of data in transmission.
  • Apple Pay: Apple's implementation of secure payments.
  • Internet services: Apple's network-based infrastructure for messaging, syncing, and backup.

Fandango is offering $5 off movie tickets if you use Apple Pay

Heading to the theater this weekend to catch up on Oscar noms before Sunday? Fandango and Apple want to help you save some $$$.

Apple is no stranger to partnering with apps to encourage the use of Apple Pay. The company has offered deals on Postmates deliveries, Instacart groceries, and more in an attempt to get more people signed up for the service. The latest offer, however, is inspired by awards season: Apple Pay customers can get $5 off movie tickets if they purchase them through popular ticketing service Fandango.

In order to receive the $5 discount, you need to order two or more movie tickets in a single transaction through either the free Fandango app (which you can download by clicking the link below) or the Fandango website. Once you've selected a movie and showtime, you must enter the promo code "STARPOWER" at checkout and choose Apple Pay as your payment method. You'll then receive $5 off your order's total. Make sure to take advantage of the discount soon, though — it's only available until March 4.

In the email sent out to Apple Pay customers regarding the deal, the company also encouraged getting red-carpet ready for your cinematic outing by using the service to purchase items at Barneys New York and Ulta Beauty (though honestly, if I'm trying to get $5 off movie passes, I'm probably not going to splurge on a $4,000 Valentino dress — but to each their own).

Now, go forth and study up for that Oscar party. And, you know, maybe use that extra $5 to go in halfsies on a bucket of popcorn or something.

How to stop Apple Pay from pestering you into signing up

$

Some can feel pestered by the constant notification badge reminding them to sign up for Apple Pay. Here's how to get rid of it.

If you've set up a new iOS device in recent years, you'll have come across a prompt to set up Apple Pay, Apple's mobile payment solution. If you've ever opted to perform that task later and then didn't do so, you'll also likely have seen a red notification badge on your Settings app and opened it only to discover not a new update, but a message urging you to set up Apple Pay.

Maybe you think you can't get rid of that badge. Maybe somebody told you that you can't. But here's the thing: you definitely can. I'm going to tell you how.

How to stop Apple Pay from pestering you into signing up.

If you don't want to sign up for Apple Pay when you're setting up a new device, just tap Set up Later in Settings when you get to that screen in the setup process. But if you've gotten the notification badge, here's what you need to do to get rid of it.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Finish Setting Up Your iPhone/iPad

  3. Tap Set Up Apple Pay.
  4. Tap Cancel.

That's all you need to do. The badge should disappear after a moment, and you shouldn't hear about it again. Of course, if you want, you can always sign up for Apple Pay.

Apple Pay reminders and media responsibility

$

Media, like medicine, should strive to help rather than harm.

Apple has escalated the reminder process for completing Apple Pay set up on iPhone and iPad. Not everyone is happy about it. Unfortunately, not every publication is writing competently on the topic either.

From The Wall Street Journal.

Though payment analysts say the service speeds up checkout times and is more secure than traditional cards, Apple Pay has struggled to achieve broad adoption in the U.S. Many remain skeptical that it is more secure, including Jack Frederick, a 29-year-old professional comedian from Queens, N.Y., who prefers using his credit card directly.

Juxtaposing the expert opinion of analysts who have investigated and affirmed that Apple Pay "speeds up checkout times and is more secure than traditional cards' with a — I can't believe I have to type this — the rando opinion of a comedian, is journalistic malpractice. It's another example of feelings-instead-of-facts FUD-spreading that makes those who would otherwise benefit most from a technology fearful of it and less likely to use it.

And it's not the only malware-in-written form presented in the piece:

"Everyone is doing essentially the same trick," said Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates. "It's really antitrust behavior."

Kay compares Apple Pay notifications in OS to Microsoft's bundling of Internet Explorer in Windows, something that is only possible when source, writer, and editor conspire to misrepresent what antitrust behavior and monopoly abuse actually mean and requires.

The original marketing around the story seemed to imply it was difficult to turn the reminder off, which it isn't — something that's impossible to believe all involved in it didn't know prior to publication — and even the current version fails to tell anyone who didn't figure it out on their own just how exactly to do it.

It's terrible for readers because, if every time someone turns on a light, a respected publication yells "fire!" just to get attention, it increasingly desensitizes people to the point that actual incendiary activity may well get lost and ignored amid all the noise.

It's also a missed opportunity. There's an important discussion to be had when it comes to simplicity vs. discoverability. But it has to be done seriously, and with the goal of informing and empowering people.

Setup Buddy, the process that onboards you to iOS products has grown longer as Apple has added new features, like "Hey, Siri", Apple Pay, the virtual Home button, Display Zoom, and more. Every feature added to the chain makes the process more tedious to long-time customers. Every feature removed makes that feature effectively invisible to new customers.

Reminding people to set up Apple Pay via a badge on Settings or a notification is potentially even more annoying for people who understand what it is and choose not to use it. For those who weren't sure or weren't prepared, it's potentially more helpful, especially considering the experience, accessibility, and security of Apple Pay, which far, far exceed traditional plastic cards.

If Apple is being too heavy-handed here, and too many people find the badge and/or notification annoying, I expect the company will stop it. If many people end up using it and Apple Pay adoption goes up, I expect Apple to (judiciously, I hope) keep experimenting with the on-boarding process across its range of features.

(This particular implementation does feel retro-fitted on, though: The process to dismiss the reminders is non-obvious due to the pre-existing language used in the dialogs, and should be fixed either way.)

Lastly, to make sure I'm practicing what I preach here's how to turn off the Apple Pay reminder:

  1. Tap the red badge on the Settings app icon.
  2. Tap Finish Setting Up Your [iPhone/iPad]
  3. Tap Set Up Apple Pay
  4. Tap Cancel.

Best for Canadians

Living in the Great White North? These are the credit cards you want that support Apple Pay.

President's Choice Financial Mastercard

If you live in Canada, then you know the Loblaw family of companies has at least one store in just about every city in the country. Love free groceries? This is the card for you, and it's the only credit card I've used since I was 19. President's Choice recently amalgamated it's PC Points program with Shoppers Drug Mart's Optimum points program, so you can now earn points for both stores on every single purchase you make.

With the base PC Mastercard, you'll earn 10 PC points or 25 Optimium points for every dollar you spend. As you receive upgrades, your PC Points will increase to 20 and then 30 for every dollar you spend (PC World Elite Mastercard — it's awesome). Every 1,000 PC Points is one dollar, and you can redeem your points in $10 quantities at participating Loblaws stores. You'll also receive travel offers, and can even earn points if you're signed up for wireless services via PC Mobile.

The interest rate is quite high at 19.97%, but if you shop at loblaws stores for your groceries, the benefits are excellent.

Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite

Want 4% cash back on groceries and gas? Of course you do, and your cap is an annual $25,000, so you can get up to $1,000 back. You'll also get 2% back at pharmacies and auto-pay recurring bills. All other purchases get you 1% back.

You'll also get special perks, like advanced ticket purchases for concerts, as well as fine dining and luxury hotel perks. You also get a 24/7 personal concierge for any reservations or other planning questions you may have. You'll receive several kinds of travel insurance, and there's no annual fee for the first year. After that, the annual fee is $39 for the primary card and $15 for each additional card.

RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard

WestJet is the best airline in Canada. That's just empirically true, and I won't have any argument. Royal Bank's WestJet World Elite Mastercard gets you 1.5% in WestJet dollars on all purchases, and you'll get 2% back on every dollar spent on WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations packages.

You get 250 welcome WestJet dollars for signing up and the primary cardholders first checked bag is always free.

American Express Gold Rewards

This card has a $150 annual fee, and for that you get 2 points for every dollar you spend on eligible travel purchases and 1 point for every dollar you spend otherwise. Travel benefits include a $75 USD hotel credit to use on hotel amenities like dining or the spa, a one-category room upgrade at check-in (when available, at participating hotels), and Hertz car rental benefits if you enroll in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program.

If you're an avid traveler, this card's for you.
